Lately there has been a lot of hysteria and talk about the benefits of bath salts being a drug and/or harmful to your health. This is only partially truthful, “bath salts” are NOT harmful in any way and have been used for centuries by all cultures in some way or another. One the other hand the new designer drug known as “bath salts” which has become increasingly popular and increasingly scary. Poison centers across the U.S. have reported growing numbers of calls about the synthetic stimulant, and more and more states are banning the drug. But as of now, there is no federal law prohibiting their sale. Make no mistake: These are not bath salts like those you would use in your bath.

The easy way to know the difference is, the drug is sold in very small amounts and most of the time say “concentrated” on them, high priced selling for about $25 to $40 a packet and is usually behind the counter. The safe bath salts are usually 4 oz or more and sell for a few dollars. Also they will look like salts, NOT A POWDER.

Bath-SaltsWhat is illegal is Mephedrone, also known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC), or 4-methylephedrone, is a synthetic stimulant and entactogen drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes. Slang names include meph, drone, and MCAT.

 It comes in the form of tablets or a powder, which users can swallow, snort or inject, producing similar effects to MDMA, amphetamines, and cocaine.

Mephedrone was first synthesised in 1929 but did not become widely known until it was rediscovered in 2003. By 2007 mephedrone was reported to be available for sale on the internet, by 2008 law enforcement agencies had become aware of the compound and by 2010 it had been reported in most of Europe, becoming particularly prevalent in the United Kingdom.
